How AR mapping tasks work in Pokémon Go

The tasks in Pokémon Go usually consist of having trainers capture a specific Pokémon, use berries to help catch them, power up ones they’ve already captured, and many more tasks that all feature playing the game. But the new AR mapping tasks have trainers interact with landmarks in their nearby vicinity to receive rewards.

When you receive an AR mapping task, it will have a distinct icon around it that says “AR mapping” on the bottom left of the task, and it will have a blue highlight. The task will be of the Pokéstop you are visiting and receive the task, or of one nearby. You will need to activate your smartphone’s camera, scan the area of the specific PokéStop, and then take a picture. Once the area has been scanned, the AR mapping task will be completed, and you can receive the reward for the field research.

You need to use the PokéStop scan feature to finish the task. This feature requires you to take a 20 to 30-second scan of the PokéStop for the AR mapping task. You do not have to upload the task immediately. You can choose to scan the PokéStop and then upload the scan at a later time.

Completing the task will be just like doing any other field research tasks you receive from a PokéStop. They also count towards your daily field research tasks. These tasks first launch on October 20, 2020, and are only available to trainers who have reached level 20 in the game. More tasks will likely release in the future as the AR mapping technology increases, which means additional rewards for trainers.
