Here’s what we know about locating a Larvitar and Pupitar in Pokémon Sword and Shield
If you’re looking to complete your Pokédex in Pokémon Sword and Shield, you need to spend quite a bit of time exploring the Galar region. Luckily, you can find a majority of the Pokémon in the Wild Area, right outside of Motostoke and Hammerlocke. A particularly tricky Pokémon to locate is Larvitar, which you need to evolve into a Tyranitar. It does have a set spawn location, though.
This Pokémon is exclusive to Shield version, so if you have Pokémon Sword, you need someone from Shield to catch it.
You can find this Pokémon in the Wild Area, and you have access to it when you receive the Rotom Bicycle upgrade to cross water. When you have this, proceed to the Wild Area right outside of Hammerlocke and go to the west to the Lake of Outrage. You can find Larvitar on the other side.
Unfortunately, you won’t see them in the overworld. It only shows up as the exclamation points in the grass, so you need to explore the wild area thoroughly to have a decent chance of locating one. You only have a five percent chance of finding it, too. You need to make sure the weather conditions are an overcast or intense sun.
If you want a bit more luck, you can find Larvitar’s evolved form, Pupitar, in the same area, and it does have the chance to appear in the overworld. Relying on finding a Pupitar before you find a Larvitar is not the best approach because you have a higher chance of locating the first evolution. You can find a Pupitar during a sandstorm, so they spawn in different weather conditions.
When you do discover your Larvitar or Pupitar, make sure not to use a Grass or Water-type because you don’t want to make it faint outright when you engage it. They are both Ground and Rock-type Pokémon.
A Larvitar evolves into Pupitar at level 30, and then it becomes a Tyranitar at level 55, which is a Rock and Dark-type Pokémon.
