Game Freak has been known to not release any downloadable content that costs money. Will Pokémon Sword and Shield finally be the games that will feature DLC?
Despite the many controversies before the games’ release, Pokémon Sword and Shield sold over six million copies during its weekend launch, making the games a success so far. The question now, though, is whether or not Pokémon Sword and Shield will get any kind of DLC.
Many video games nowadays offer DLC to add more content to the main game at a smaller price, and while it can be tiring having to pay more money for content locked out of the main game, it is a sure way to support both the community and the game’s developers, and to explore new features that may have been out of the scope of the original game.
Game Freak is one of the few developers that has not released DLC in any of their main Pokémon games. The only updates in the past have been patches to bugs and glitches. And while there are datamines of Pokémon such as Bulbasaur and Squirtle coded in the games, they’re obtainable, at least as of now. This is most likely due to the possibility of transferring them from Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! to Sword and Shield with Pokémon Home.
For now, if a Sword or Shield player were to already complete the Pokédex and finish the game’s main story, there is admittedly not much left to do other than participating in the Battle Tower, exploring Wild Areas, and doing the small post-game story featuring the games’ mascots and catching them.
Game Freak has not confirmed or denied the possibility for DLC. It has confirmed that the National Dex will not return in Sword and Shield, but presently, we will have to wait and see what the future holds for these games.
