New Call of Duty reportedly returning to WII, Sledgehammer Games leading development

The Call of Duty franchise may be returning to its World War II roots for this year’s entry, according to a number of prominent leakers.

On February 17, Twitter user Victor___Z posted an image that suggested that the FPS series would be heading back to that era. Victor___Z, who has form for leaking Call of Duty information ahead of official announcements, also insert a hammer emoji in the tweet.

Curious fans have taken this to mean that Sledgehammer Games, who made 2014’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII, will be leading development on the franchise’s 2021 title. Sledgehammer have spent the past two years assisting Infinity War and Treyarch on Modern Warfare and Black Ops Cold War.

Victor___Z’s tweet comes one week after another Call of Duty leaker — ModernWarzone — claimed that Sledgehammer was definitely leading development on the next Call of Duty game. These two suggestions also tie into information provided by leaker Tom Henderson, who believes that Call of Duty 2021 will be a “gritty” game that should be as “controversial as Modern Warfare”. Henderson also alleges that Warzone will be integrated into this year’s entry, and that the game will include elements of guerrilla warfare.

It remains to be seen how much of these leaks is true, and we won’t know for some time. Call of Duty 2021 is likely to be released in November, so it will be a while yet before Activision reveals more on this year’s game.
