Forspoken is an upcoming game from the team at Luminous Productions. The Square Enix offshoot studio helped out with Final Fantasy XV but is now focused on its own game. Forspoken was announced back in 2021 at a Square digital showcase but has been delayed several times, making its release date a bit tough to keep track of.
Luminous Productions’ latest was first met with a delay at the March 2022 State of Play. Initially, it was set to launch on March 24, 2022, but that delay pushed it back to October 11, 2022. On July 6, fans were hit with yet another delay somewhat out of nowhere. This time, the game is being pushed back to next year — January 24, 2023, to be exact. That’s a Tuesday, which means Forspoken will be running up against the upcoming Dead Space remake that launches on January 27. Fortunately, there’s not much genre crossover, so neither game should steal too much of the other’s audience.

For the first two years, the game will be console exclusive to the PS5. While details about the plot are still relatively light, we do know that Rogue One co-writer and former games journalist Gary Whitta is heading up the game’s writing department. In the short trailers we’ve seen thus far, we’ve seen the protagonist Frey Holland dashing around the world of Athia, using her magical abilities to stay alive.
Speaking of those magical abilities, Forspoken director Takeshi Aramaki has said the gameplay will be focused on speed and fluidity. Those abilities help the devs hit that goal by allowing the player to quickly move throughout the environment in ways that wouldn’t be possible for normal humans.
