NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella has shared some predictions for the end of the year, and offered more interesting intel about the sales of PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in the United States.

According to Piscatella, by the end of the year PS4 and Xbox One time aligned userbase will be ahead of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by “at least” 30%, which once again remarks the unexpected success of this generation of consoles.

“All three current generation consoles will each generate at least 4m units sold in 2018. Total 2018 hardware sales across all console and portable platforms should exceed 17.5m units, the highest total achieved in the U.S. market since 2012,” he added.

By the way, Nintendo Switch will be the best selling console in the United States during Q4 2018, a result which allow it to also be the best selling console of the entire 2018 calendar year.

“2018 has proven that there’s never been a better time to be playing video games. The market has continued to show that it is not a zero-sum game, while consumer choices continue to expand, resulting in a far stronger market overall,” said the analyst. “We should continue to see the benefits from these trends in both the holiday quarter and the year-end results.”

We couldn’t agree more, as video games have offered, throughout the current generation and further, deeper and more mature experiences for those who love single-player, and more varied play sets for the fans of multiplayer. Just look at God of War and Fortnite, to name a few.
