Microsoft has announced five studios acquisitions back at E3 2018, but it doesn’t look like it’s over yet. The platform holder is indeed still interested in adding more developers to its portfolio, with few specific criteria.
According to Microsoft Studios’ head Matt Booty, the publisher is considering more acquisitions in the area of developers with 50-100 people and capable of building new games every 2-3 years.
“I don’t want to seem like we’re going out to fill a quota. It’s not about filling a spreadsheet by any means,” he told GamesIndustry International.
“We will, however, have an interest in studios right now that fit this criteria of 50 to 100 people, who are making games on a two to three year cadence, and have content that we think will be of interest to our Game Pass subscribers. That means content that is a little different to what our big AAA franchises can deliver.”
Interestingly, Xbox head Phil Spencer said in a separate interview that “I’ve been explicit that we needed to up our investment in our first-party studios, and at E3 we announced the addition of five new studios. I don’t think we’re done. People want to play great games on our platform.”
So, we’re definitely expecting more news from Microsoft soon, or at least by the end of the generation. Which teams do you think would be a good fit for the platform holder?
