What platforms will Return to Monkey Island be on?

Where will Guybush Threepwood show up next?

There was quite a break between 2009’s Tales of Monkey Island and the most recent entry: Return to Monkey Island. For the first time in over a decade, the classic adventure game series made a return in an installment that refreshed many of the genre staples the series pioneered way back when. It was also a return for a few of the key pieces of the development team that worked on the game in its heyday, including series creator Ron Gilbert and lead designer Dave Grossman. And although Guybrush Threepwood and crew initially appeared on Nintendo Switch and PC, we also now have confirmation that those won’t be the only places you’ll be able to play Return to Monkey Island.

Return to Monkey Island platforms

As mentioned above, Return to Monkey Island was initially released exclusively on PC and Switch, although the door was left open at the time to later releases on other consoles. As of a November 7 announcement by publisher Devolver Digital, though, we now know we can expect to see the game make its way to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles as well. The wait won’t be long either, as Monkey Island is slated to release on these consoles on November 8.

Return to Monkey Island story and characters

Without spoiling too much, Return to Monkey Island’s story comes after the events of 1992’s Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. Series protagonist Guybush Threepwood makes a return in the game, along with his recurring love interest Elaine Marley and quite a few other series mainstays. And although the art style of the original games has seen a fairly drastic update, Return to Monkey Island deftly handles the series’ past, serving up plenty of puzzle-solving nostalgia that never feels self-serious or overly sentimental.
