With the World Cup approaching quickly, Nintendo France thinks EA will focus its attention on the Nintendo Switch for 2018.

The Nintendo Switch needs third-party publishers to survive. That’s pretty obvious, and despite some pricing and hardware concerns, it seems like some of the biggest companies in gaming are still interested in developing for the Switch. Case in point: Nintendo France’s managing director stressed the EA will most likely “double down” on the Switch this year with the 2018 World Cup on its way.

The news first came up in an interview with the French publication Les Numériques. During an interview with Nintendo France’s managing director Philippe Lavoué, Lavoué explained that third-party releases play a major role in the Switch’s sales in France, accounting for 26 percent of all games sold.

While Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle ultimately sold the most third-party copies with 150,000 units purchased, Lavoué noted that EA’s FIFA 18 managed 73,000 sales in the country. He called this a “test case” for EA, and suggested this year will be a major one for EA’s presence on the Switch. In short, that means “more announcements on the Switch,” as well as investing in gaming on the Switch as the World Cup draws closer.

Whether EA will take major steps forward to bring series like Battlefield or Star Wars Battlefront to the console, well, that remains unknown. But Lavoué’s comments are promising for EA fans that want to see more FIFA on the Nintendo Switch, at the very least.
