Players hoping to try out a new direction for a classic series will be happy today, as Metal Gear Survive’s beta has gone live on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
This is the series’ first entry after the departure of series creator Hideo Kojima, so interest is high to see just what Survive is all about.
The beta features two maps and three missions to play in co-op mode, and playing through it can earn you bonus in-game items in the full release. The items are a FOXHOUND name plate, a Metal Gear REX head accessory, and a bandana.
Survive has little connection to the rest of the series, as the story features Mother Base soldiers from Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes entering a wormhole. They end up in a dimension where zombies run rampant, and that’s where the game begins.
The game’s title says it all, as it’s all about surviving the elements. Players can build and craft things like weapons and barricades, and level up as they go along, along with a robust customization system.
If nothing else, Survive seems like it could be fun in co-op with friends. Gamers hoping for a mindblowing story may be disappointed, but we won’t know for sure until Survive releases on Feb. 20 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
The beta lasts up until Jan. 21.
