Spyro the Dragon Trilogy Remaster: Everything We Know

Spyro the Dragon’s first three games are reportedly coming to PlayStation 4 with new assets and content, a Kotaku U.K. report claims.

There may be a Spyro the Dragon remaster on the way, and if reports are to be believed, it’s coming sooner rather than later. The iconic PlayStation series will reportedly see a remaster in Q3 2018, according to a report from Kotaku U.K.’s Laura Kate Dale.

Dale first reported on the rumor on Feb. 13, citing “multiple sources familiar with the project.” While there’s no official word yet on the trilogy remaster from Activision, here’s what you need to know about the current rumors.

There’s reportedly new assets, and maybe even uncut content

The upcoming trilogy reportedly features Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon all remastered for PlayStation 4. Dale’s initial report suggests the upcoming remasters include “new assets, lighting, animations and cinematics,” and a “remastered soundtrack” for the games. PlayStation 4 Pro support is also planned too.

Dale also said there is “the tantalising promise” of cut content from those original games coming with the remaster, and a new save feature will make the remaster more approachable for a 2018 audience. While this hasn’t been confirmed yet, it would fall in line with the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy’s remaster from June 2017, which features significantly updated assets along with improvements to the game’s original save functions.

Dale’s initial report argues that the game is being developed by Vicarious Visions, who worked on both Activision’s Destiny 2 PC port and, more pressingly, the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy itself.

If that ends up being the case, then it’s very likely the alleged Spyro the Dragon remaster trilogy will perform and act similarly to the N. Sane Trilogy. Speculatively speaking, major asset updates, physics tweaks, and general gameplay improvements may come at launch, refining the original Spyro the Dragon trilogy experience for 2018.

One source said it’s releasing in September

The Spyro the Dragon remaster may be here sooner rather than later, too. The trilogy will reportedly be announced in March 2018, followed by a release for sometime in Q3 2018, according to Dale’s official report.

Furthermore, one source told Dale that the remaster will land in September, right in time for Spyro the Dragon’s 20th anniversary. Whether that ends up being the case remains yet to be seen. But in the meantime, fans should have a better idea by March as to whether the rumor’s claims are credible or not.

It’s reportedly a one-year timed exclusive

During 2017 and 2018, leaks emerged suggesting that Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is just a one-year timed exclusive, after which the game will release on other platforms. This includes alleged ports for PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One, Eurogamer wrote in early Feb. 2018.

Now, Dale argues this may be the case with the Spyro the Dragon remaster trilogy, too. In her original Kotaku U.K. report, she says the game will remain a one-year exclusive for PlayStation 4 “before being ported to other systems in 2019.” If so, that theoretically means Spyro the Dragon’s trilogy remaster may land on Nintendo Switch or PC, just as the Crash Bandicoot rumors suggested the same for the N. Sane Trilogy.
