Uncharted creator Amy Hennig, who served as the creative director on EA’s troubled Star Wars game known as “Ragtag,” is reportedly leaving EA to start her own independent studio. Her departure leaves fans with more questions than answers about the Star Wars title’s future.

During a Gamelab conference in Barcelona, Hennig said that she had not worked with EA since January and that she was “in negotiations” to officially part ways, according to Eurogamer. EA closed down Visceral Games in October, where Hennig was working with EA on the studio’s Star Wars game.

She also confirmed to Eurogamer that she isn’t working on anything Star Wars related, describing “Ragtag” as “on the shelf.” She says EA Vancouver is “working on something pretty different” that focuses on a “more open world” direction.

“So yeah, I’m not doing anything Star Wars,” Hennig told Eurogamer. “And, who knows what the future may hold, but that project is on the shelf now. […] Everybody loved what we were doing and I’d love to see us resurrect that somehow, but it’s complicated.”

After EA, Hennig plans to split her time between creating games independently and consulting within the industry. She’s even considering creating VR games once her independent studio is up and running.

“I’m hoping to bring some people on board, I would love to have a little company of about six to eight people, 15 at the most, and do some more projects, do some VR stuff,” Hennig told Eurogamer. “I’m consulting with some VR companies and doing a ton of research because I haven’t played a lot to immerse myself in it.”

After shutting down Visceral Games late last year, EA announced that a development team from Worldwide Studios would take over “Ragtag’s” development and the project would be led by EA Vancouver, according to an email to employees obtained by Kotaku. It remains unclear for now if “Ragtag” will eventually resurface as a new project, although with Hennig’s departure, the game will most likely become a drastically different experience than its initial linear, narrative-driven direction.

Meanwhile, Respawn Entertainment is developing a separate Star Wars game for EA titled Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Originally announced during E3 2018, that title follows the Jedi between Episode III and Episode IV and is expected for 2019.
