New “Echo Fighters” for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have been revealed as part of a new Nintendo Direct released earlier today. These characters will be Chrom, from Fire Emblem, and Dark Samus, from Metroid Prime who will function as alternative character skins for Marth and Samus respectively.
Echo Fighters are essentially more spectacular skins of characters currently in the roster, using nearly identical move sets from their other half but with different effects and animations. It is similar to the relationship between Marth and Lucina, or Pit and Dark Pit.
Chrom teased his inclusion during Robin’s official reveal animation for the Wii U and 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. Dark Samus, one of Samus’ many evil doppelgangers, will float menacingly above the playing field.
The direct also revealed that Echo fighters can be displayed as separate fighters on the character select screen or stacked on top of the character they are echoing. When stacked, players can change between them with the press of a button.
The announcement came during the same Nintendo Direct that debuted the entirely new character, Simon Belmont, from the Castlevania series. Belmont has his own Echo character, Richter Belmont, from Rondo of Blood. King. K Rool from the Donkey Kong Country series was also revealed during the presentation.
