Indeed, while challenging Team Leaders looks fine, playing against a friend is a bit more troubled at the time of writing.
You can play with a friend if you are Ultra/Best Friends or you have him close to you and scan a QR code.
Anyway, Reddit is full with issues about the state of the feature, as there seems to be a lot of lag that even prevents you from attacking.
At times you even start the battle with your Pokémon already damaged, or don’t receive push notifications outside of the app when someone wants to play with you.
On top of that, it seems that – despite Niantic’s claims – the game is providing different rewards based on whether you win or lose.
So, there’s a lot of things that definitely need to be polished as quick as possible, and we’ll let you know when the dev team is updating the app to do so.
