Bethesda has announced that Skyrim VR will be released on PC for SteamVR gamers on April 3, 2018. This release will complete the line of Fallout 4 and Skyrim VR releases on PlayStation 4 and PC and let gamers wander the Old Kingdom with their VR headset for the first time.
Bethesda is continuing its releases of VR-specific version of some of its most popular games. Last fall saw the release of both Fallout 4 and Skyrim VR versions for the PlayStation 4, followed by a SteamVR version of Fallout 4 to give PC gamers their first taste. Today Bethesda announced that the PC version of Skyrim VR will hit SteamVR on April 3rd.
Skyrim VR for SteamVR
Skyrim VR contains the complete critically-acclaimed core game as well as all its official add-ons, Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn, all bundled together into one package. The game is expected to work best with HTC Vive headsets and controllers, as was the case with Fallout 4 VR. If history is any guide, Oculus Rift users will be able to enjoy the game, but some tweaks to its controls may be required. Time will tell though, as Skyrim VR doesn’t feature anything quite as complex as the Pipboy, which caused most of the problems for Rift users.
Skyrim VR has been available on the PlayStation 4 since last November and has received mostly favorable reviews from critics and gamers alike. That is in line with the general reception of Fallout 4 VR, which received notably higher ratings from users on the PlayStation 4 than on the PC. I suspect that is mostly due to the issues Oculus Rift users experienced, and given the market share that Oculus holds, I would expect the results of this release to mirror that pattern.
I’m not sure where I’m going to squeeze a few hundred hours of extra VR gaming, but it sounds like it will be a requirement once this comes out. Skyrim has been one of my favorite gaming experiences ever, and adding the VR touch to this classic is exciting. Now, if Bethesda could only get to work on the next iteration of the Elder Scrolls series already, we’d all appreciate that.
