At the EA Play event in Los Angeles today, we got another look at Anthem, the upcoming game from Bioware. The developers talked about how they felt Anthem was the natural progression of what they had already released to date, without simply returning to the world of Mass Effect. They want the game to center around a deep and meaningful story, that will matter to the players as they spend time in the world. The game will center around a social space, where players can interact with NPCs, and learn more about the world they are in and how it impacts them as players.

In Anthem, you play as a Freelancer, a person who pilots armored suits known as Javelins. You are on the front line of a power struggle between man and it’s enemies, including the vicious world that you inhabit. The game will have four classes, all with their own abilities. Some will aim to be versatile, while others will specialize in taking or putting out damage, mobility, and other such attributes. There will be cosmetics and vanity items for purchases in game, but no randomized lootboxes, and no way to pay for ingame power.

Due to the suits, you can fly, and also travel underwater. Hopefully this leads to some interesting environments and gameplay ideas. The gameplay that was shown did help to alleviate my fears that this would just be a Destiny clone. The environments and suit abilities all meshed together to create a pretty unique looking experience, and there seemed to be a more impressive sense of scale than Bungie’s shooter. At my age, I really should be above falling into hype traps, but I must confess I am a bit excited to see what happens with Anthem. A solid, cooperative experience for the TLDRGames crew is all I ask for, but will Bioware deliver?

Anthem will launch on February 22 2019 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
