It has been a long time coming, but starting today in the US, and from tomorrow in the EU, people will be able to change their PSN ID. Sony confirmed the feature would finally be available in a blog post on the official PlayStation website.

We’re excited to announce that the online ID change feature on PSN is officially launching to all PlayStation 4 owners from tomorrow. You’ll also be able to change your online ID via a web browser, and that feature will also be available from tomorrow. Thanks to all of you who participated in the beta preview program back in October/November and who gave us your feedback!

There is a surprising amount of information you should be aware of before availing of the feature. First up, Sony recommends that you look at their list of tested games before deciding to make the change, as some games have been found to have issues with the name change.

You will be able to change your PSN ID from either the PlayStation 4 or your web browser at the Sony website if you so wish. You will not, however, be able to make the change on a PS3 or PS Vita. Sony is also very careful to highlight some of the issues that you might run into after changing your PSN ID. These include the below, but I imagine more issues could arise.

  • Your previous Online ID may remain visible to you and other players in some areas.
  • You may lose progress within games, including game saved data, leaderboard data, and progress towards trophies.
  • Parts of your game and applications may not function properly both online and offline.
  • You may lose access to content (including paid-for content) that you may have acquired for your games including content like add-ons and virtual currency.

While it is great that service will finally become available, it is something you will want to think about before you do it. About the price, the first change is free, and changes after that will cost £7.99/€9.99. For PlayStation Plus members, it will cost £3.99/€4.99 for each change after the first one.
