Not long after allegations towards NetherRealm Studios for hostile work environment became public, Kotaku AU shares a story of one developer’s time working on Mortal Kombat 11.

Mortal Kombat has always been a violent gaming franchise. The series has existed since the early 90s, and as technology improved, so has the graphics for the games. The graphics for the Mortal Kombat games have become so good, that the more recent entries in the franchise have touched the nerved with a lot of people.

It was one thing to see a pixelated Sub-Zero rip the spine out of Scorpion back in the old-school arcades. It’s another thing entirely when you see Noob Saibot rip apart an opponent’s body from within, and it looks fairly real.

It’s not for everyone, and it may be best for people with sensitive stomachs to avoid this game. However even those with the strongest stomachs can’t always be immune to constant imagery of extreme violence.

On Kotaku AU, writer Joshua Rivera shares a story about one developer’s time working on this game. Due to the repetitive nature and long work hours of game development, this one developer (who remains anonymous) ended up spending a lot of time researching much graphical imagery.

The developer shares what goes in making the game, and how much work it is to make the violence in Mortal Kombat 11 as real as possible. However, the developer would confess that they started having graphic dreams. They would visit a therapist, who diagnose them with PTSD.

The developer reveals to Kotaku that other people in NetherRealm studios suffer similar things.

This story that Kotaku AU posted will no doubt paint an even more negative picture against NetherRealm Studios. After Mortal Kombat 11 was highly criticized for its grinding gameplay, allegations towards the company began circulating across the internet. Many former employees have critique the company for the way they handle contractors, and for the hostile work environment.

These are dark days for NetherRealm Studios, and we can only hope all these controversies will encourage the company to enforce better working conditions in the future.
