Buzzfeed has reported that a film script based on Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic is being written.
Will there be a movie based on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic?
Knights of the Old Republic is a role-playing video game released in 2003 on the original Xbox and PC. Knights takes place in the extended Star Wars universe, taking place 4,000 years before the events of the main film saga. The game’s story centers on the Republic’s battle against a Sith Lord named Darth Malak. You play as amnesic force-user, and your decisions affect the outcome of the game.
Knights of the Old Republic received critical acclaim for its narrative and customization. Often cited as one of the best Star Wars video game, Knights has received two sequels. The last one, Star Wars: The Old Republic continued to get expansions until 2016.
Due to the original’s popularity, it isn’t surprising that it has been reported that Lucasfilm is working on a film script based on Knights of the Old Republic. Buzzfeed has put up a piece explaining that a script based on Knights of the Old Republic is being written by Laeta Kalogridis, writer of Shutter Island and co-writer of Alita: Battle Angel. Buzzfeed also reports that the script is close to being finished, with the film potentially being the first of a trilogy.
Ever since Disney bought the Star Wars brand, the company has been more aggressive towards making new films in the franchise. Outside the main numbered sagas, several spin-offs were put into development. Knights of the Old Republic is known for its deep and compelling storytelling, making it a perfect candidate for future filmmakers to adapt. There are certainly worse Star Wars material they could have chosen to make into a film, and this will no doubt excite fans if this turns out to be true.
Now the question is if this movie gets made, will it adapt the story as is, meaning with the same characters and plot points? Or will the filmmakers only loosely adapt the first game?
