Over the last few weeks, Sony and Microsoft working together on cloud gaming efforts has been one of the biggest news out there and led many to think that this cooperation could involve more than streaming between the brands of PlayStation and Xbox.

In an interview with the Financial Times, new PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has shared that a “scenario” where the two labels could “combine” doesn’t exist at all and that the platforms will keep being separated and competing one another with their respective strengths.

“There is to my knowledge . . . No scenario where the PlayStation and Xbox platforms combine. The two platforms will remain separate with their own separate identities and brands and fans,” he said, which means that PS5 and Xbox Scarlett may use the same tech but will keep ‘fighting’ each other.

Interestingly, a few hours ago we’ve reported about Ryan believing that Sony will never “walk away” from the story-based genre of games, which has seen PlayStation being so strong all over the generation of PS4 – and with more titles still to come like Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima.

“We’ve never had greater success with our own narrative-driven, story-based games than we’re having right now. We feel good about that, and it’s certainly not a genre of gaming we’ll ever walk away from,” Ryan said, and it’s hard to deny that.

So, outside of business reasons, there’s no chance that we’re going to see the lines between PlayStation and Xbox blurring more than they’ve already done in the past few months, with Microsoft seeking new studios for single-player games and specs being so similar.
