In an interview with Kotaku, series producer Eiji Aonuma has revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, which was just revealed at E3 2019, has been put in the works since the team at Nintendo had too many ideas for DLC to be used in the original, so they went on with a brand new game.

In an interview with Kotaku, Eiji Aonuma spoke about how The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, which Nintendo announced during the E3 2019, is currently in development. The reason behind Nintendo deciding to make a sequel for the Breath of the Wild was because the team had too many DLC ideas for the original game. This issue brought them to the conclusion of needing to create a sequel.

“When we released the DLC for Breath of the Wild, we realized that this is a great way to add more elements to the same world. But when it comes down to technical things, DLC is pretty much data—you’re adding data to a preexisting title,” Aonuma told Kotaku.

The studio, “wanted to add bigger changes, DLC is not enough, and that’s why we thought maybe a sequel would be a good fit,” Aonuma added. When questioned about whether Breath of the Wild 2 was going to become additional content for the original, though, he was rather clear pointing out that work on that was just pre-production:

“Initially we were thinking of just DLC ideas, but then we had a lot of ideas, and we said, “This is too many ideas, let’s just make one new game and start from scratch,” Aonuma said. From the sounds of it, the studio didn’t immediately jump from DLC content to the idea of a sequel. There was a steady process involved.
