Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is going to be canon, as you might’ve heard, and this means that in building it Respawn Entertainment had to adhere to a lot of rules imposed by Disney and LucasFilm to keep the game consistent with the massive lore of the franchise.
One of the things we’ve learned thanks to a preview of the game from IGN is that the developer has been prevented from introducing a dismembering feature to cut human enemies limbs off in general gameplay. This will be allowed only “in select cases.”
IGN reports that “droids and spiders and the like can have their legs and arms (if applicable) lopped off, but not humanoids. These sort of rules about what you can or cannot do when it comes to removing parts of people with a lightsaber are common in Star Wars properties, alluding to the fact that this seems to be a Lucas Arts edict.”
And the same goes for decapitation, which the team at Respawn will have to be imaginative enough to hide in a smart way throughout cutscenes.
“One of the rules we were given was to always hide the cut in case of decapitation. And never show blood. The burn of the lightsaber is supposed to cauterize it instantly,” said Drewry Carvin, a story artist on The Clone Wars – Season 7.
“And about hiding the cut of the decapitation – a good/smart way to do it is to have a camera move and have something in the Foreground hide the spot where the head gets cut. Using the motion of the camera and a foreground element – like another character – is more cinematic than using a camera cut.”
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is releasing on November 15, 2019, for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
