Barioth, a monster originally appearing in Monster Hunter 3, has been confirmed for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne in newly released gameplay footage.
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne will bring back plenty of classic monsters when it launches in September, and today we got a look at one more of them. Barioth, a monster that first appeared in Monster Hunter 3, was heavily rumored to appear in the expansion and we now have confirmation with a video of it in the game.
The upcoming expansion to Monster Hunter World takes place in an icy area called Hoarfrost Reach. Since Barioth made its home in polar regions in its previous appearance, it became a prime candidate to make its Monster Hunter World appearance in Iceborne. Barioth also shares a base model with Nargacuga; a bat-like wyvern previously confirmed to appear in Iceborne. This speculation amped up players as they assumed that that would make it a little easier to include than a monster that Capcom would have to build from scratch.
Our first brief look at Barioth came courtesy of Game Informer who published a short video featuring the returning monster. Barioth only appears onscreen for a few seconds, but we get an idea of what the creature looks like and its behavior in the expansion. The video shows the Barioth tussling with a Banbaro that wanders into its turf while fighting the player. Though the Banbaro can hit hunters with the force of a speeding train, it doesn’t seem to pose any challenge to the significantly more agile Barioth, which quickly pounces on its prey.
Looking something like a cross between a dragon and a saber-toothed tiger, the Barioth has massive fangs, a long, scaled tail, and wings. At the end of the gameplay video, it’s seen taking flight after its brief fight with the Banbaro. Barioth is considered a flying wyvern in Monster Hunter’s classification system, but it’s just as capable on the ground. Its claws let it grip the ice, enabling it to use controlled slides and short leaps to outmaneuver hunters.
Barioth is the seventh new monster confirmed for Iceborne. The creature’s reveal follows the announcement of Banbaro, Beotodus, Nargacuga, Shrieking Legiana, Tigrex, and Velkhana. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne releases on September 6 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a PC release planned for the winter.
