Nintendo has always been one of those companies very linked to the idea of producing new hardware only when it can offer a real change in the life of gamers and the way they play video games. Think of Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch, to name a few of the latest.

Things are not going to change anytime soon, as the platform owner is already planning on offering a brand new way to play video games in the “next generation,” via a brand new controller that could be a total disruption in comparison with the Joy-Cons of the Switch.

Shigeru Miyamoto has told the shareholders (via NintendoEverything) that he does “believe that we should quickly graduate from the current controller, and we are attempting all kinds of things. Our objective is to achieve an interface that surpasses the current controller, where what the player does is directly reflected on the screen, and the user can clearly feel the result.”

“This has not been achieved yet,” he added. “We have tried all kinds of motion controllers, but none seem to work for all people. As the company that knows the most about controllers, we have been striving to create a controller that can be used with ease, and that will become the standard for the next generation.”

So, you should not get too attached to the idea of Joy-Cons, considering that Nintendo is already working to “graduate” from them and go onto the next challenge. We’ve yet to learn about whether the company plans to stick with the concept of the hybrid console, but should it be the case we must admit Joy-Cons are an excellent way to go for it as they’re quite decent for playing at home and very good in portability.

There’s a rumor that the incoming Nintendo Switch Mini could not offer them as detachable, for example, so it’s clear that the platform owner is doing some research to better look into the things it can build together with the existing controllers.

How do you feel about them instead, and how would you improve them?
