A leak in May claimed that Pokémon Sword and Shield would give Farfetch’d an evolution for the first time ever. Now that other parts of the leak are being confirmed, it’s starting to look more likely.
The latest trailer for Pokémon Sword and Shield revealed a mountain of new information about the game, from new characters to details about the Gigantimaxing mechanic and how the Pokémon League will work. Almost as exciting as the new content the trailer revealed was the fact that it’s making a previously farfetched leak look more realistic.
Back in May, an anonymous forum post made some claims about Pokémon Sword and Shield that seemed pretty wild at the time, including the name of a third Legendary Pokémon and evolutions for starters. It was hard to take the leak seriously at first, due to the seeming outlandish nature of some of the claims and the fact that it was posted anonymously on 4chan. Now, many of the details in the post have turned out to the accurate, including the existence of Dynamaxing and Gigantimaxing, which is making the information that still hasn’t been confirmed seem a bit more believable.
One easy-to-overlook detail in the post is the claim that Farfetch’d finally get a regional evolution. Farfetch’d was one of the original Gen 1 Pokémon that appeared in Red and Blue. It’s the first Pokémon in the Pokédex (No. 83, to be exact) that neither evolves from another Pokémon nor evolves into something else. Throughout its appearances in other games, Farfetch’d has never gotten an evolution, likely leaving Farfetch’d fans (yes, they exist) to assume that it would never happen.
If you’ve been holding out hope that your favorite odd duck may get a chance in the spotlight, after all, your wishes may finally be coming true. According to the leak, Farfetch’d will be able to evolve into Sirfetch’d in Pokémon Sword and Shield. Given the theme of the Galar region, and the fact that we have other knight-themed Pokémon like Corviknight already, Sirfetch’d could fit right in. The Pokémon Company does love its puns, after all, so having Sirfetch’d wield a leek as its weapon and be a literal Onion Knight (as seen in Dark Souls, Final Fantasy, and Game of Thrones) would fit right in.
As likely as it might seem, this part of the leak hasn’t been confirmed yet. If it doesn’t pan out, maybe you’ll find a favorite among one of the new Pokémon already confirmed for Sword and Shield instead.
