The Detective Pikachu movie is an adaptation of the video game of the same name. It centers on a young man, who teams up with a Pikachu to solve crimes. The young man is the only one who understands what the Pikachu is saying.
The film version was released in theaters on May 10 and received favorable reviews from critics. It is currently the highest-rated video game film on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans of the Pokémon franchise were more positive to the movie, with many fans praising how it handles Pokémon in live-action.
The film version of Detective Pikachu just past an important milestone this weekend; as reported by Yahoo News, Detective Pikachu has surpassed the worldwide gross of Warcraft.
Warcraft is a live-action film based on the top-rated game series of the same name. It released in 2016 and received abysmal reviews. Its total box office gross is 433.7 million USD, making it the highest-grossing video game based movie at that time.
During the July 12-14 weekend, Detective Pikachu was able to earn around 6,994 USD in five of the remaining territories it is still playing at. These five territories are Norway, New Zealand, Slovenia, Portugal, and Colombia.
This puts Detective Pikachu’s worldwide gross over 436 million USD, past Warcraft’s 433 million. That makes Detective Pikachu the highest-grossing motion picture based on a video game.
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will release on DVD and Blu-ray on August 6, 2019.
