Shiny Rayquaza is coming to raids beginning July 31.
A new raid boss is coming to Pokémon Go. Well, not a new one, but a returning favorite. Once Armored Mewtwo steps out of the spotlight, Rayquaza will take the scene.
Announced on Twitter with an excellent video, Raquaza will begin appearing in five-star raids starting Wednesday, July 31 at 1 p.m. PDT and ending Monday, September 2. There’s a good chance for it to be legendary during this time. And, let’s be honest here, Rayquaza has one of the best shiny variations of any Pokémon.
Oh. We almost forgot. ?
If you’re lucky…you may encounter a Shiny Rayquaza!!!

Rayquaza will take the place of Armored Mewtwo, who took the stage after the return of Kyogre and Groudon earlier this year. Armored Mewtwo likely was a promo Pokémon that popped up in raids for the upcoming Pokémon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. Rayquaza is the third legendary Pokémon in the Hoenn region, so it makes sense that it would make an appearance following the other two.
Rayquaza is a Dragon/Flying-type Pokémon, giving it a severe weakness to Ice attacks. Stocking your team with Ice Pokémon would be firmly in your favor should you wish to win a raid. If you’re short on Ice types, Fairy will target the Dragon element nicely. The official Pokémon Go website also suggests Rock and Dragon-type moves, if you’re really in need.
The event begins on July 31. Good luck, Trainers.
