In an interview with the Chinese outlet Bilibili, via PSU, Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot has revealed that he would love to see a mainline Assassin’s Creed game exploring China, even though he didn’t mention the exact era he would travel to.

The franchise has enjoyed one year off in terms of new releases, and the next game in the series is rumored to be set in a Viking setting. The last two iterations were set in Ancient Egypt (Origins) and Greece (Odyssey).

“We would love to do that,” said Guillemot. “So I can’t tell you more today but we think it would be fantastic too. As you remember we had some 2D Assassin’s Creed (Chronicles) that were based in China, so I can’t give you a clear answer, but it is something we would love to do at one point.”

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles, it’s worth noting, was built at Climax Studios, not Ubisoft Montreal which usually works on the series nor Odyssey‘s Ubisoft Quebec, and is not part of the mainline franchise despite being canon.

Ubisoft’s CEO was, as usual, pretty cagey but sure enough, his words let us think that the publisher and developer are taking into consideration the idea of coming back to China, this time around for a mainline game, which would be a great setting, to be honest.

In the past, Feudal Japan was also very rumored, and there’s a chance that in the same game you could also have a look at China, or whatever. With the company increasing its investment in those territories, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see that happen soon.
