The highly anticipated remaster for Final Fantasy VIII finally has an official release date.

Final Fantasy VIII is the eighth entry in the iconic RPG franchise. The game centers on a group of teenagers who attend a militaristic school called Balamb Garden. The main characters join SeeD, a militant group. Initially, the game is about the protagonist’s attempts to stop an evil sorceress. Eventually, the protagonists are forced to face against a great evil beyond time and space itself.

Final Fantasy VIII was one of the more popular Final Fantasy games to not have a remaster on modern consoles, including on the Switch and PlayStation 4. Final Fantasy VII, IX, X, and XII can be played on the current generations of consoles, and have updated visuals.

Fortunately, Square Enix announced a remaster for VIII in this year’s E3. The Final Fantasy VIII Remaster was announced to be coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam later in the year. No official release date was revealed today.

On the Final Fantasy Twitter account, Square Enix announced that the Final Fantasy VIII Remaster will be released on September 3.

While Final Fantasy VIII was always one of the more popular Final Fantasy games from fans, Square Enix has continued to raise interest for the Remaster through their social media accounts. Recently, the company tweeted out a clip of the updated visuals.

The tweet was a reference to a popular meme. Even though Final Fantasy VIII was visually groundbreaking when it was first released 20 years ago, the blurry visuals of characters’ faces have become a source of endless mockery online. One of these jokes stems from how “sexy” lead character Squall is in the original VIII.

However, the updated visuals in the Remaster properly showcases how big of an upgrade the game will be. It is no longer a joke that Squall is sexy; he is sexy now!
