Project Scarlett To Push On CPU Power Rather Than GPU Next Gen

Xbox One and PS4 gen has been rather powerful in terms of GPU, but hasn’t managed to put that power on par for what matters CPU. That has caused a bottleneck even on Xbox One X, the most powerful console around at the time being, which Microsoft strongly wants to avoid on Project Scarlett.

Talking to OXM, via GamesRadar+, general manager on Xbox games marketing Aaron Greenberg has discussed the matter and confirmed that CPU is being the focus this time around since Microsoft has a vision where frame rate needs to improve outside of all the stuff on 4K (and beyond) resolution.

“We feel good about what we’ve done with the Xbox One X, and the same team that built that is also building Project Scarlett,” Greenberg said. “What we’re seeing today is a huge upgrade in GPU – you can output in 4K, a lot of other benefits, memory structure and so on.”

However, “for next-gen, I think you’ll see a big upgrade in CPU because we want to make sure you don’t have any compromises with the frame rate. Yes, we can do 4K, but we can also do frame rates up to 120. I think that type of capability will be something people don’t see today.”

While this isn’t a confirmation of games running at 120fps on Project Scarlett because that’ll always depend on how developers decide to design their titles, there is no doubt Microsoft is providing the tools to reach such achievements. The great news here is that, with such a “big upgrade in CPU,” all that GPU power won’t be wasted in the usual bottleneck.
