Death Stranding is an ambitious game, or at least it has been presented as such. A lot of that ambition is due to the curriculum vitae of its creator, Hideo Kojima, the maker of the Metal Gear series.
Kojima had to raise the bar again to live up to his name. It looks like we’re going to have a bold new experience from the creator in terms of narrative and gameplay experience that could turn into a video game marvel or a disappointment.
Chances that it is the first are still there. Kojima himself shared in a recent interview that even he doesn’t have a clear idea about what Death Stranding is genuinely going to be about.
“Death Stranding… even now, I don’t understand the game,” Kojima told Financial Times. “Its world view, gameplay, they are all new. My mission is to create a genre that does not currently exist, and which takes everyone by surprise. There is, naturally, a risk in that…”
Also, in the same interview, Kojima added a bit of his vision about the current state of the games industry. He sees it as a component of giving a service to consumers, along with the art component video games provide.
“For games to be interactive and to deliver the enjoyment, there has to be a reality where there are lots of people backstage making it all happen,” he noted. “That is us – a kind of art-driven service industry.”
Death Stranding is set to release on Nov. 8.
