Hideo Kojima has been one of the first, and still is one of the most prominent, to blur the lines between movies and video games. As such, the movie industry is paying homage a lot to his figure over the last few years, and that was just the beginning.

Film Festival Cologne has indeed awarded Hideo Kojima with the Cologne Creative Award, which “honors a personality who contributes to shaping the future of audiovisual narrative in a visionary and creative way through a form of media expression.”

It’s a further recognition of the importance of Kojima not only in gaming but also in the narrative business overall, which also include cinema and might also move the game developer to jump on that train too in the future, as he often says.

“Hideo Kojima could always easily transcend borders – and he has changed the gaming industry that way. As far back as in the 80s, when Mario was still hopping on turtles, the Japanese game designer experimented with narrative elements in his cyberpunk detective adventure SNATCHER and in his long-lived masterpiece, the nine-part secret agent epos METAL GEAR SOLID,” reads the description of the award.

“Is it a game? Or is it a film? There’s no difference to Kojima. The incessant growth of the technological possibilities only fueled his desire to exhaust these possibilities to the extreme. And so it’s no surprise that he is ready for his next and maybe mightiest leap yet, the sci-fi adventure DEATH STRANDING, starring digitized stars like Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, and Léa Seydoux.”

Congrats to Kojima, and of course we expect this award to lead to some more controversy about a man who’s equally loved and hated among video games fans.
