Forget treasure. All Nathan Drake wanted to do was find a director for his big-screen Uncharted debut. The Sony project has failed to get off the ground for many years, losing big directors like Dan Trachtenberg and Shawn Levy. But it looks like fortune could finally be smiling upon it, with a new director in talks to come aboard.

Deadline reports that Travis Knight is in talks to helm the project. He brings a terrific line of work along with him, including his directorial debut with Kubo and the Two Strings. But fans may recognize his stellar effort to bring the Transformers movies back to form with last year’s Bumblebee.

Knight got his start as an animator, working on projects like Coraline and The Boxtrolls. But his last two films have proven he’s got a knack for spinning box-office gold. And teaming up with Tom Holland, the Spider-Man actor who would portray a younger version of Drake, could be just the ticket.

At this point, the Uncharted adaptation has a release date around December 2020. But that could likely change, as Knight probably won’t rush on making this effort shine like his previous films. Sony has yet to comment on the matter, but hopefully, we’ll hear something on its progress as soon as Knight joins.

Considering Uncharted’s massive game sales – 15 million copies since its release, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – a movie adaptation is a given. Here’s hoping that Knight will guide it in the right direction.
