Game Informer was corrected with an earlier information about there being 18 gyms in Pokemon Sword and Shield.
There won’t be 18 gyms in Pokémon Sword and Shield, as previously stated.
Over the last few days, Game Informer has been sharing a lot of new information on Sword and Shield. These details include an exclusive interview with the game’s director Shigeru Ohmori and producer Junichi Masuda. Game Informer also exclusively shared there will be a major and minor Pokémon League in Sword and Shield.
Fans already knew there was going to be specific Pokémon gyms that will be exclusives to either Sword or Shield. For instance, Bea, the fighting Gym Leader, will be exclusive to Pokémon Sword. With a major and minor Pokémon League, Game Informer got informed there was going to be 18 or 19 Gyms in the game.
Of course, fans were excited about the prosperity of there being a gym for every type of Pokémon, though it turns out Game Informer was misinformed. Serebii shared the news of the information on its website and Twitter.
Game Informer received a correction about there being 18 gyms in Pokémon Sword and Shield. There will be the same amount of gyms in Sword and Shield as there were in past games. Almost all other Pokémon games have had eight gyms, which is probably the same amount that Sword and Shield will have. According to Serebii, there are 18 gyms within the lore of the game, split between the major and minor leagues.
Serebii Note: @GameInformer has since been contacted by The Pokémon Company regarding the "18 Gyms" to be corrected that the gyms will be of a similar number to prior games but different between versions. https://t.co/gDbXkHSvkT

This change will undoubtedly upset many fans, especially since many are still not over the other controversial decisions that Game Freak has made with Pokémon Sword and Shield.
