Final Fantasy VII Remake is finally becoming a reality next year, and we all know it took ages before it could happen after so many years passed from the original reveal to the release on March 3, 2020, for PlayStation 4.

So, what’s next for Square Enix? One could think that considering how anticipated and likely successfully FF7 Remake is going to be, there could be yet another remake on the way, like Final Fantasy VIII Remake or something like that. But what does Square Enix think about that?

Yoshinori Kitase, who’s working as the producer on FF7 Remake and has served as game director on FF8, has discussed the chances that Final Fantasy VIII Remake could be done in the future, leaving the door open to that possibility but not with him involved.

“If the youth that inherits the genes of Final Fantasy can step up and do it, then I’d like to see it made,” Kitase said, giving his blessing but hinting that he would instead not be involved as massively as he’s been in the original game nor the remake of Final Fantasy VII.

For Final Fantasy VII Remake, the project started from my desire to make Final Fantasy VII with today’s technology while I’m still here at Square Enix,” he added, via Siliconera. “So I’d like to see it [Final Fantasy VIII Remake] done by the youth of Square Enix.”

Kitase is probably the most reliable person we’ve got to know publicly in Square Enix, so there’s a chance that he might be busy on a new mainline Final Fantasy in the future, now that the foundation for those remakes has been laid, or could even retire since he’s been around for so long.

However, a Final Fantasy VIII Remake doesn’t seem so out of the cards, so maybe it could happen once all the episodes of Final Fantasy VII Remake get released. And we don’t even know how many those are yet.
