Game director and vice president Jeff Kaplan has revealed that it was “very challenging” to convince Blizzard to merge Overwatch 1 and Overwatch 2 and allow players of the original game to keep playing with those who will purchase the sequel whenever it releases.
“It’s very challenging because the industry has done things the same way for so long,” Kaplan revealed at BlizzCon, via VG247. “And so it’s hard to get people, push them out of their comfort zone and say, hey, I think we could do it a better way.”
“I try to tell them if we do what’s right by the players, they will be happy, we will have a better game, and we will end up in a better place in the long run,” he added, revealing a very farsighted vision of the industry.
Blizzard has already revealed that with a copy of the original game, you’ll still be able to get all the heroes and all the maps that will be released for a sequel. Also, you’ll manage to keep playing PvP matches in a unique pool between OW1 and OW2. The sole exclusive content for OW2 will be PvE and story missions.
Anyway, it looks like it’ll still take a lot before we can get our hands on the final game, as Overwatch 2 will be talked about at BlizzCon 2020 and in a fashion/moment where it won’t be around yet. This means that the day one could be fixed only at a couple of years from now.
