PS5 Cartridge Patent Suggests It’s For Additional Storage

We’ve been reporting multiple times about Sony patents that might possibly be linked to the development and release of PlayStation 5, and we’ve yet to understand whether all of those will truly have an impact about the actual platform.

We’ve been reporting multiple times about Sony patents that might be linked to the development and release of PS5, and we’ve yet to understand whether all of those will genuinely have an impact on the actual platform.

This time around, we have further details about the cartridge patent that, a few days ago, prompted people to believe that the Japanese platform owner could be implementing cartridges instead of Blu-ray discs for some reason. I’m not sure I comprehend (since Sony is one of the leaders in the Blu-ray business).

However, the news here is that the patent has been updated by Sony Interactive Japan, not with new images and concepts but with a description in Japanese that can be translated like this (thanks to our colleagues at Let’s Go Digital, via PushSquare):

“This is a recording medium which can record various data, such as a character, an image, an animation, a sound and a program. By loading the opening provided by the game console with the tip end part by which a variety of pins of this cartridge were provided, the various data recorded on this cartridge can be read.”

So, it looks like this cartridge device might have been patented to have some additional storage to attach to PS5 easily. Now, to add some storage to your PS4, you’re required to do not so immediate ‘tricks’ that have always kept me away from doing so since I’m constantly afraid of breaking tech stuff.

But what if Sony launches a device that easily allows you to change storage or add on top of that you already have on your PS5? That would be very different and much more appealing, just in case I’d need to have more than the 1TB SSD storage that is expected to be equipped on the next-gen console.
