Outlast series developers Red Barrels today announced the next title in the franchise, called The Outlast Trials, and was quick to answer two key questions: Is this Outlast 3 (no), and is this a VR title (also no)?

The developer has been responding in the comments of the announcement, which was posted on Facebook, ensuring Outlast devotees that despite The Outlast Trials not being a direct sequel to the other Outlast games, it does take place in the same universe. And, according to Red Barrels co-founder David Chateauneuf, players can expect classic Outlast goodness. “Now we’ve done our proof of concept, it is time focus on content creation, variety… and gore,” he said.

The Outlast Trials will take place during the era of the Cold War, which could set the game anywhere from 1945 to 1991. Players will enter the game as a test subject of some kind, where they and others will have to fight to survive in a horror-drenched environment.

While no official release date was announced, we aren’t expecting the game anytime soon. Also, the wording of the official announcement is leading many fans to speculate this could be a cooperative or multiplayer game set in the series.

Both Outlast and Outlast 2 made their way to several platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and many speculate The Outlast Trials will have the same variety.
