A Microsoft spokesperson has provided some more details about next-generation Xbox branding and name, via a note issued to Business Insider.
Microsoft’s next-gen platform is called “Xbox,” with “Series X” only being an iteration of that next-gen platform, according to the spokesperson. The naming should help with all the confusion spread over the internet following the original announcement at The Game Awards.
“The name we’re carrying forward to the next generation is simply Xbox, and at The Game Awards, you saw that name come to life through the Xbox Series X.”
Microsoft also noted that both “Xbox” and “Series X” will allow to further expand the family of next-gen consoles in the future, just as it has happened with Xbox One along the last six years. The company is rumored to have a low-specification next-gen console called Lockhart in the making, too.
“Similar to what fans have seen with previous generations, the name ‘Xbox Series X’ allows room for additional consoles in the future,” added the spokesperson. “We’re excited to offer fans a glimpse at the next generation of gaming with Xbox Series X. But beyond that, we have nothing further to share.”
Xbox Series X is releasing during Holiday 2020. More details are expected to come at E3 2020 at the latest, where Microsoft has promised to be sharing further information about pricing and launch lineup for its next-gen console.
