During May, developer Niantic has introduced a series of Throwback Challenges celebrating the first regions of Pokémon in Pokémon Go. There are four Throwback Challenges, and the third one revolves around the Hoenn region, which is from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. The Hoenn Throwback Challenge in 2020 takes place from May 14 to 21, and during this time, you have a chance to capture Groudon, the legendary Ground-type Pokémon.
You can capture Groudon for a limited time during the event. To do so, all you need to do is complete the challenges offered in the Hoenn Throwback Challenge. These are available for a limited time, and you can find them in your Research Task activities. There are eight different sets of challenges made up of three tasks, each one rewarding you for completing them.
At the end of these research tasks, you have guaranteed encounter with Groudon, and if you capture the Pokémon, it should have fire punch as its charge attack. Fire punch is a limited-time attack, not generally found on Groudon.
Groudon is a pure Ground-type Pokémon that has a max CP of 4,115, an attack of 270, a defense of 228, and stamina of 205. It’s an incredibly powerful Pokémon to have in your line-up, and if you have the chance to capture it during the Hoenn Throwback Challenge event, make sure to do before time runs out.
We’ll update this page in the future when the research tasks for this event release.
