A new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate direct dropped today, revealing a bunch of new details about the title ahead of its release on Dec. 7 for the Nintendo Switch.
The direct was announced over the weekend, just before the grand finals of Super Smash Bros. Melee at Evo 2018. No one at the time knew what Nintendo would announce during the direct and prepared themselves for anything and everything.
Needless to say, there was a whole lot announced during the Nintendo Direct, so we have put together a handy dandy list of everything that happened during the 30 minute presentation.
Simon Belmont/Richter
The first of two major character reveals. Simon Belmont from Castlevania opened the show with a bang. You can also play as Richter as an Echo Fighter.
The duo are also getting a Castlevania-themed stage called Dracula’s Castle. Alucard also appears in the game as an Assist Trophy.
King K. Rool
Closing the show as good as it began, King K. Rool, the menace of the Donkey Kong Country series, was the final announcement of the Direct. K. Rool pushes the roster beyond the initial 66 promised by Nintendo, meaning there may be more surprises in waiting.
Dark Samus and Chrom
Two new Echo Fighters made their debut. Dark Samus and Fire Emblem‘s Chrom, flesh out the gigantic roster.
Echo fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have move sets based on other fighters, but a different appearance. The duo join Richter, Daisy, Lucina, and Dark Part on the Echo Fighter roster.
Stages
There are over 100 stages in Smash Bros. Ultimate. Most of them are returning arenas, but there are also new stages based on Dracula’s Castle and New Donk City. All these stages will be available to play from the start without any need to unlock them.
A new feature, called Stage Morph, will also give you the option to seamlessly transition between two different stages in the middle of a match.
Modes
A bunch of new and existing modes were revealed to be coming to the game on launch. Some of new modes shown off include:
- Squad Strike: Players participate in 5-on-5 or 3-on-3 skirmishes, with each player using either five or three consecutive fighters in one battle.
- Tourney Mode: Up to 32 players can participate in a tournament with custom made rules. Perfect for locals and events.
- Smashdown: After battling in this mode, the previously selected fighters will no longer be available, forcing players to have to pick a different fighter for the next match.
Music
There are over 800 pieces of music in-game for you to listen to whenever you want. You can even play the tracks in handheld mode on the go to have a personal Nintendo jukebox at your disposal. The tracks will even play when the console is in sleep mode.
Items, Pokemon, and Assist Trophies
New items have been added into to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate which include the Banana Gun, Killing Edge, Bomber, Death’s Scythe, Staff, Ramblin’ Evil Mushroom, and Rage Blaster.
There are also an abundance of new Pokémon and Assist trophies, with most of the Pokemon hailing from the Alolan region. Along with Alucard, Zero from Mega Man X, Rathalos from Monster Hunter, and Shovel Knight arrive as guests from other games. The Moon from Majora’s Mask will menace players as an Assist Trophy as well.
