Flying in World of Warcraft was introduced over ten years ago, in The Burning Crusade expansion. It gave players the opportunity to explore Draenor on their brand new shiny flying mount. You can now fly in nearly every zone in World of Warcraft, traveling the game’s expansive continents and complete content quickly and efficiently. Perhaps too quickly and efficiently for the some developers, who hoped players to experience the rich world they’ve designed as intended.
With the Warlords of Draenor expansion, Blizzard made the unpopular decision to disable flight in new zones at the start of each expansion. Flying was available later in the expansion, upon completion of an achievement ensuring that your character had completed the adventure on foot.
This same limitation applies to World of Warcraft’s latest expansion, Battle for Azeroth. Players are unable to fly in the expansion’s new Zandalar and Kul Tiras continents, and instead must rely on extensive use of flight paths and additional tricks to get where they’re going (I love you, Goblin Glider Kit).
We will, of course, see flying added in a later patch. In WoW’s last expansion, Legion, flying was implemented seven months after the expansion’s launch, with the Tomb of Sargeras content patch 7.2.
We can’t be sure when we’ll see flying in Battle for Azeroth, but it helps to be as prepared as possible by completing the available achievement Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part One to ensure you’ll be well on your way to fly the less-than-friendly skies when you can. In the meantime, earning this achievement will grant you increased passive mount speed on Kul’Tiras and Zandalar. Here’s what you can do to work your way towards unlocking flying in World of Warcraft‘s Battle for Azeroth!
How to earn Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part One
Battle for Azeroth Explorer
This achievement requires you to completely explore both Kul’Tiras and Zandalar continents, uncovering and mapping all available regions. You’ll likely uncover most of the zones without even trying, as questing while leveling then later completing World Quests will take you through most every part of both continents. The achievements will let you know which areas you still need to discover, such as “Savagelands,” but that isn’t all too helpful. Just look for any areas which are still unrevealed on your world map.
Azerothian Diplomat
For this achievement, you’ll have to earn Revered standing with all factions available to your side. While Champions of Azeroth and Tortollan Seekers reputation is required for both factions, Horde and Alliance players will have different requirements based on their storylines. You’ll earn reputation with these factions by completing story quests in their respective zones, as well as by doing World Quests. We recommend using an addon such as World Quest List to easily see which World Quests award reputation with which faction.
Horde factions required at Revered:
- Champions of Azeroth
- Talanji’s Expedition
- The Honorbound
- Tortollan Seekers
- Voldunai
- Zandalari Empire
Alliance factions required at Revered:
Wide World of Quests
Since you’ll already have to complete quite a few World Quests to reach the required reputation levels for the previous achievement, this one should come naturally. It’s worth noting that this achievement specifically requires 100 different World Quests, so if a World Quest pops up that you don’t recall having done before, it’s best to head out and knock it off. Completing “Beachhead” 100 times just won’t cut it, but Scrollsage Nola certainly appreciates your efforts.
Zandalar Forever! or Kul Tourist
To ensure you’ve experienced as much of Battle for Azeroth’s story-based gameplay before breezing through it all with a flying mount, Horde and Alliance players will have to complete all zone-specific achievements, earned through completing main questing storylines. There are numerous side-quests peppered into each zone, and it can sometimes be difficult to tell which quests “count,” but a good rule of thumb is simply if it sounds important, it probably is.
Zandalar Forever!
Horde players will have to earn the following zone-specific meta achievements:
- The Throne of Zuldazar
- The Dark Heart of Nazmir
- Secrets in the Sands
- A Bargain of Blood
- The Final Seal
Kul Tourist
Alliance players will have to earn the following zone-specific meta achievements:
Ready for War
The final achievement required for obtaining Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part One, Ready for War is awarded upon completion of your faction’s War Campaign. Progress through the War Campaign is gated by reputation levels earned with The Honorbound (Horde) or 7th Legion (Alliance). Here’s how and when you’ll unlock each part of the War Campaign:

You’ll gradually gain access to new War Campaign quests while leveling up to 120, requiring you to establish footholds on Kul’Tiras, send followers on missions at the mission table, complete Island Expeditions, and reach Friendly reputation with Talanji’s Expedition, Voldunai, and Zandalari Empire. After you’ve reached player level 120, new quests will unlock at specific reputation levels with The Honorbound.
