Best Settings to run Fortnite on a Mac

I'm a Mac.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

If you are playing Fortnite on a Mac, you may be running into some framerates troubles. Many Macs are not precisely designed to be excellent at running games, but there are some tweaks you can make to get a better experience. You will more than likely need to make some sacrifices if you want to get decent framerates, so keep that in mind.

Before playing Fortnite on your Mac, you should always ensure that no additional programs are running in the background. Make sure you close down everything that you don’t need and try to make sure you are just running the game itself.

Now, start the game and go to the Video options menu. Change your settings to the following values:

  • View Distance – near
  • Shadows – off
  • Anti-Aliasing – off
  • Textures – low
  • Effects – low
  • Post Processing – low
  • VSync – off
  • Motion Blur – off
  • Show FPS – on

Load into a game, and pay close attention to your FPS counter. You should have a goal that you wish to hit, and if it is above that goal, you can improve the settings a little, if it is below that goal, we need to make some more sacrifices.

Go back to the video settings and lower the Display Resolution. Lower it by one step, then go back and play another game and check your frames rate. You will need to find a compromise between the resolution and the framerates, and find a middle ground you are happy with.

This helps so much because the screens on Macs tend to be high-quality, high-resolution screens, which means that the machine is trying to push a lot of pixels when you play games. Lower the display resolution should have a very positive effect on your frame rates.

If you still need to try to scare up some extra frames, going to the Audio settings and lower the audio quality will free up a small amount of processing power and should net your an extra frame or two.
