Destiny 2’s long-awaited version of the Black Spindle, the Whisper of the Worm, has finally been discovered. Here’s how to get your hands on it.
The Black Spindle was one of Destiny‘s best and most challenging to attain exotic sniper rifles. The Destiny 2 community has been itching to get their hands on a version of it, and Bungie has obliged. The Whisper of the Worm is the next-closest thing to a Black Spindle in Destiny 2, and it is just as difficult to get as the original.
Whisper of the Worm
As you can see by its looks alone, the Whisper of the Worm holds a lot of resemblance to the Black Spindle.
Its intrinsic exotic perk is called White Nail, and it gives the weapon higher base precision damage. Rapidly landing three precision hits will refill the magazine. Sound familiar? This is very similar to the perk the Black Spindle had.
Its other perks are as follows:
- Polygonal Rifling barrel: increases stability.
- Mulligan trait: Missing a shot has a chance to the return ammo directly to the magazine.
- Fitted Stock stock: increases stability. Moderately controls recoil. Slightly decreases handling speed.
- Armor-piercing Rounds magazine: Rounds cause extra damage to combatants’ shields and overpenetrate targets. Slight increases range.
How to Get Whisper of the Worm
Begin by making your way to the Lost Oasis on Io. You need to wait until a Taken Blight public event occurs. You do not have to participate in it, however. During the event, one of three Taken mini-bosses will spawn somewhere in the Lost Oasis. Check the various caves and crevices. You’re looking for one of:
Urzok, Aspect of Hate
Urzok, who used to be a giant pain in the you-know-what in Destiny, can be found on the western edge of Lost Oasis near a ledge.
Drevis, Aspect of Darkness
Drevis can be found inside a tunnel just a few steps north of the landing zone in this region.
Ta’urac, Aspect of War
He’ll be located inside a cave near the southern edge of Lost Oasis.
Once you’ve killed this enemy, a portal will appear, prompting your fireteam leader to “Enter the Anomaly.”
The Whisper
Entering the anomaly being a quest called The Whisper which has a 20-minute time limit. Rush through the Lost Sector Grove of Ulan-Tan, which will be void of enemies. When you get to the chest, look to the left side for a ledge and take the path. Destroy a blight and drop down the hole. This is the beginning of an elaborate jumping puzzle, which we will break down below.
Start by jumping across a chasm and then follow the red ledge along the right side. Be careful to avoid several pistons that may push you off the edge. You’ll drop down to more red ledges, avoiding more pistons, and making your way across the vast bottomless pit. Stick to the platforms lit in red. When it seems like there is nowhere else to go, you’ll have to jump around a corner and then crawl along a narrow ledge, timing your crawls so you don’t get pushed off. Jump across and ride a small platform up to the top. Don’t miss a tunnel entrance on your left. If you reach a dead end, you’ve gone too far.
You’ll reach a V-shaped tunnel with various moving wall pieces trying to kill you. Avoid them and enter the next area, which has you jumping from ledge to ledge, avoid Taken rifts which will push you and a couple of nasty snipers trying to end your run to glory.
In the room with many tubes on either side, the one you want to enter is on the right-hand side, at the very top and back of the wall. Dropping down the tube will land you in a large ruined area. There are two paths to take here, a shortcut, and a path along the wall which may lead to another secret. For now, we suggest you take the shortcut.
Skip this if you took the shortcut, otherwise look for grassy patches on the grey slabs on the rock walls. Follow the advice of this Reddit user and scale the sides of the room to find a narrow opening which will lead you to the next section. Try not to fall down into the crack as it will lead to a dark zone area with a never-ending supply of Taken Thrall.
You’ll eventually come to a vast open room. Depending on the method you took in the area above, you’ll either just take the path along the left, or you’ll drop down to it from up above. If you feel like you have time to spare – you do not – you can head along the right side and towards a pretty sweet looking Vex gate. While we’re not certain yet, it would seem like taking the upper path in the rock wall room and then taking this right path will lead to more secrets in the heroic version of The Whisper quest.
After you’ve gone to the left, take a leap of faith towards a narrow opening of light, and you’ll be just about at the first room of Taken enemies. Clear them out and continue forward. These fights are tough and will eventually lead you to an area where all three of the Taken bosses from earlier will be your opponents. Urzok, Aspect of Hatred, Drevis, Aspect of Darkness, and Ta’urac, Aspect of War will need to be dispatched. Upon their death, you will receive the Whisper of the Worm. It looks like its power level will be quite high as well.
