Powerful Gear from Daily and Weekly Challenges in Destiny 2 is the best way to level up your Guardian, but how do they work?
Once you’ve reached level 50, the new max level in Destiny 2: Forsaken, and hit a power level of 500, it’ll become noticeably more difficult to increase your power level. This is due to Bungie’s “soft cap” which forces Guardians to pursue more of the daily and weekly challenges to get powerful gear. Powerful gear is one of the best and most certain ways to get your power level going up, no matter how slowly it may seem. Fortunately, there are now more ways to get powerful gear than ever before. Let’s have a look at the challenges that grant powerful rewards, and more importantly, what Bungie means by “weekly” and “daily.”
Weekly Challenges
Weekly Challenges aren’t new to Destiny 2, but their format has changed slightly with the Forsaken expansion. You no longer have to visit any specific NPCs to claim them, but instead they are tracked via the Director. Weekly Challenges exist in several forms, ranging from Crucible match completions to the Nightfall, and new Gambit challenges.
Weekly challenges will reset during Destiny 2‘s regular reset cycle, which takes place every Tuesday at 10 am PDT.
Daily Challenges
Daily Challenges are smaller, bite-sized challenges, that will still reward you with Powerful Gear. Guardians can earn Powerful Gear by completing Daily Challenges in the following areas:
- Crucible
- Gambit
- Heroic Missions
- Strikes
The naming convention of “Daily Challenges” is a little bit confusing, however. If you thought that the “Complete a Strike” Daily Challenge would repeat each day, you would be incorrect. Instead, Bungie has chosen to roll the four Daily Challenge areas over the period of four days, with one new activity getting a Daily Challenge every day. Here’s how Bungie explained it in their most recent This Week At Bungie post:
Daily challenges, on the other hand, offer a unique challenge each day, and they reset every four days. Here are some examples:
- The first daily strike challenge was offered on Tuesday, September 4. So, the next daily strike challenge will arrive with a reset on Saturday, September 8.
- The first daily Gambit challenge was offered on Wednesday, September 5. So, the next daily Gambit challenge will arrive with a reset on Sunday, September 9.
- However, players will retain daily challenges until they’re completed.
- If a player completes the daily strike challenge on Friday, September 7, the challenge will be offered once more on Saturday, September 8.
- If a player does not complete the daily strike challenge by Saturday, September 8, they will not receive a duplicate challenge. Instead, the challenge will be reset and progress will be cleared.
To summarize, one Daily Challenge will become available every day, but each Daily Challenge will reset only every four days. So if you just completed your daily Gambit challenge, you’ll need to wait another four days. It’s a bit of an odd system, but once you get the hang of it, it’ll make sense to you. I suppose it’s meant to encourage players not to just repeat one particular activity on a daily basis but instead participate in all areas of Destiny 2.
Powerful Gear
One significant change in Year 2 of Destiny 2 with regards to how Powerful Gear is awarded is that you no longer need to visit anyone to claim it. In Year 1, Guardians would have to visit Commander Zavala or Lord Shaxx to claim their rewards. Now, as soon as you complete a Daily or Weekly Challenge, the Powerful Gear will drop. This can be a little bit confusing as you might miss it amongst all the action. The one exception to this rule is the Powerful Gear reward earned by completing a Flashpoint. To claim that, you will need to visit the local vendor of whatever planet the activity took place on.
