In Assassin’s Creed: Origins, players took on the role of a medjay, a type of police of the desert. In Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, players can choose to play as Alexios or Kassandra, his older sister. Regardless of your choice of character, you’ll be referred to as a misthios. You can gather what that means purely by the types of requests the folks in the world make of you. You’re frequently asked to perform specific tasks in exchange for drachmae, the Greek currency. That’s because a misthios is essentially a mercenary.

The direct definition of misthios is as follow:

  1. employed for hire, hired

So as a misthios, Kassandra or Alexios will take on many tasks, from retrieving lost items to outright dispatching of people. It is these latter tasks that draw the work of a misthios closest to that of a traditional assassin. It makes sense that mercenaries of the period were often asked to assassinate people, and Ubisoft has done a fantastic job of conveying the player’s place in the world and their profession as a misthios.
