Here are the biggest games to expect this month’s releases.
Summer is historically not suitable for new video games. The general public’s attention gets drawn to the more beautiful weather and outdoor activities, such as festivals, barbeques, and the beach. Naturally, people tend to purchase fewer video games, and so fewer games are launching in the summer months.
That’s not to say that July is barren of new releases. While it’s no September, there are still a few titles that are sure to be worth your time. With that said, here are the biggest and best games that are due to come out this month.
Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers – PS4, PC – July 2nd
The newest expansion for one of the larger MMORPGs on the planet, Final Fantasy XIV, Shadowbringers comes with a mountain of new content for the game. New jobs, races, an original location in Norvrandt, the game’s level cap increases from 70 to 80, and a new eight-player raid is among a handful of the new features players can expect to find in the neShadowbringers expansion. The expansion releases today.
Sea of Solitude – PS4, Xbox One, PC – July 5th
German-based developer Jo-Mei brought their indie psychological adventure game Sea of Solitude to EA Play at E3 in 2018. The title was a refreshing change from the usual plethora of EA’s sports and big-name releases. Sea of Solitude had players tackling the ever-expanding importance of mental health, as they played Kay, who tries to piece together the truth behind her monstrous appearance around an abandoned city, based on Berlin. Part of EA’s EA Original range, which include A Way Out and the Unravel games, this new title has a good chance of success. The game releases on July 5.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 – PS4, Switch – July 12th
Already out in Japan and receiving good reception, Dragon Quest Builders 2 is set to release onto the western market on July 12. Anyone who has played the first game knows what to expect. But for everyone else, imagine if you took Minecraft and put it in a Japanese action RPG, and you’ll have a rough idea. It’s also a fantastic gateway to the themes of the mainline Dragon Quest games, which are a tremendous series of traditional JRPG games that come highly recommended. Check out the trailer for Dragon Quest Builders 2, and pre-order the game if you haven’t already. You still have time before July 12.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order – Switch – July 19th
After a ten year hiatus, action RPG/hack & slasher Marvel Ultimate Alliance is back as a Switch exclusive. The original game launched back in 2006 with Raven Software at the helm. This new game is being tackled by Dead or Alive, and Nioh’s Team Ninja with a similar aesthetic, and the title features the biggest roster of Marvel heroes and villains the franchise has seen. The new game, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, draws inspiration for its story from the infinity war comics from the early ’90s. Players can expect to see as many bosses and surprise characters as there are playable ones. There’s going to be a lot of fan service in this game.
Wolfenstein: Youngblood – PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC – July 26th
Are you not yet tired of your fill of blowing up the heads of evil Nazi’s as BJ Blazkowicz? Well sadly, BJ is gone, and the next game takes place 20 years after the events of The New Colossus. Players are taking control of Blazkowicz’s twin daughters, Jessica and Sophia. Co-op is available for the first time in the Machine Games saga of Wolfenstein games; Youngblood promises more Nazi death as you help the French Resistance claim back their country, which has been under Nazi rule since World War II. For those purchasing the Nintendo Switch version of the game, there is no physical card for the title and only a digital download.
Those are some of the bigger titles coming out this month. Make sure you grab the ones you’re excited about and prepare for some of the bigger games coming out later this year.
