When will Rocket League be free to play?

Rocket League races into the free to play category later this month.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Since its initial release date on July 7, 2015, Rocket League has gathered a massive community of loyal players. People who’ve played little else since the launch practiced and moved up through the ranks, and eventually played competitively. The easy to pick up, difficult to master gameplay still has loads of players hooked, and it will look to further the reach as Psyonix takes it free to play starting September 23.

With the September 23 arrival of free to play Rocket League will come the launch of the game on the Epic Games store for PC. The free to play launch will also bring the Llama-Rama in-game event to celebrate the start of the game’s new cost. No details have been provided on what the event is exactly, but it is clearly a Fortnite-related event as the logo features a Fortnite Llama, and it is launching on the Epic Games Store, owned by Epic Games, which also owns Fortnite.

As a bonus, if players add Rocket League to their library between September 23 and October 23, they will receive a $10 EGS coupon redeemable on games $14.99 and up. Additionally, once players download and launch the game, they will receive the in-game items Sun Ray Boost and Hot Rocks Trail. Of course, players will also now be able to purchase DLC and cosmetics for Rocket League using their favorite creator’s creator code for the Epic Games store.

This free to play launch will also bring:

  • Season 1, with a new Rocket Pass. No other information has been provided on the new season yet.
  • Competitive tournaments, the tournament feature is being revamped with much more information in a Rocket League blog post on the subject.
  • Game-wide challenges, the ability to complete in-game challenges to earn XP and items.
  • New cosmetic packs featuring Endo and Jager vehicle skins, wheels, boosts, explosions, trails, and more.

Some important information for first-time players as the game moves to free to play is that Xbox Live Gold is still required on the Xbox platform. PlayStation and Nintendo Switch players do NOT need to purchase PS+ or Nintendo Switch Online to play, but Xbox players will still need a gold subscription.
