Cube World: Does it Support Windows 7?

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Is there way to make Cube World work on Windows 7, like an early build of the game from 2013 did?

Cube World is an action-adventure video game that was released on Microsoft Windows on Sept. 30. The game uses blocky-based graphics, looking somewhat similar to the highly popular Minecraft game. Cube World has you create your own character and choose your own class. You explore this cube-based world and explore many dungeons.

Cube World has been in development since 2011, and an early-in-development version of the game was initially released in 2013. The game wouldn’t be fully released until today, and one of the biggest question gamers have for the game is its availability. While it was always meant to be a Microsoft Windows game, when that early version of the game was released in 2013, it was able to run on Windows 7.

Six years later, Microsoft Windows 7 has become outdated. Whereas newer versions of Microsoft Windows can play the game fine, it didn’t seem as if there was a way to play the game on Windows 7. This has become an issue to some gamers as they initially purchased the game on their Windows 7 back in 2013. Is there a workaround?

Cube World: Does it Support Windows 7?

The short answer is technically no, but there is a temporary solution to the problem. There’s no official way to have Cube World work on Windows 7, yet one fan on Reddit seemed to have found a solution. Reddit user Andoryuuta was able to figure a way to have the game be playable on Windows 7, and shared that information through GitHub and Reddit.

Though we haven’t tried the solution ourselves, a Reddit moderator validates Andoryuuta’s and says it is safe to use. Other players on the Reddit page also confirmed that Andoryuuta’s solution has worked for their version of the game.

Here’s how GitHub lists out the solution:

  • Head over to the releases page and download the zip file.
  • Extract the .dll files to your cube world directory, next to your cubeworld.exe.

If you are willing to try, you can test the solution yourself. However, the game will still crash when you exit out of the game, so it is only a temporary solution.

Not only that, but Microsoft plans to end support for Windows 7 on Jan. 2020. What that means is that Microsoft will no longer provide technical support for any issues, software updates, and have security updates or fixes.

With Microsoft Windows 7 on its last legs, it may be simpler to update to a newer version of Microsoft Windows rather than go through the hassle to make Cube World compatible with Windows 7.
