The controls of Mario Tennis Aces can be hard to understand for some players. Each button on the Nintendo switch controller has an action when you play a tennis match in Mario Tennis Aces, from how to lob the ball to how to power shot the ball. In this Mario Tennis Aces Controls guide, we have listed all the controls and what buttons you need to press in order to perform them in-game.

Note: Most of the Shots can be used while serving.

Button – A

  • Ability: Topspin Shot
  • What It Does: After hitting the ball it bounces higher.

Button – B

  • Ability – Slice Shot
  • What It Does: Slicing will result in the tennis ball bouncing closer to the other side of the net.

Button – Y

  • Ability – Flat Shot
  • What It Does: The flat shot is return shot with speed. It’s the fastest compared to your normal shot.

Button – Up + X

  • Ability – Lob
  • What It Does: Forces your opponent towards the back of the court and drops much faster. Use it when your opponent is close to the net.

Button – Down + X

  • Ability – Drop Shot
  • What It Does: The Drop shot draws opponents closer to the net. The Ball lands front of the court and bounces lower than other shots with a backspin.

Button – Right Analog Stick

  • Ability – Trick Shot
  • What It Does: Use the right analog stick shots that you cannot reach. When you do that you can press any other button you want to perform for another shot.

Button – R or ZR

  • Ability – Zone Shot
  • What It Does: Lets you aim the ball before launching it at your opponent’s side of the field.

Button – L or ZL

  • Ability – Special Shot
  • What It Does: When your Energy Gauge is full press L or ZL it gives you the chance to break your opponent’s racket.

Button – Double Tap B, A, or Y

  • Ability – Power Shot
  • What It Does: Quickly Press any of the above buttons twice for a Power Shot, which is quick and hard to defend.

Button – Hold R

  • Ability – Zone Speed
  • What It Does: Slows down time for you to line up your next shot.

Button – Hold A, B or Y

  • Ability – Charge Shot
  • What It Does: When the ball is returning to you press A, B or Y for a charged topspin, slice or topspin. Doing this will slow your movement down so time it beforehand. Hold B when the ball it getting to you release B to execute the shot.

Your main aim should be that your shots are away from your opponent. If you are having trouble learning these shot switch to the practice mode to get better at them and put your tennis skills to the test.
